Winter Break

I certainly figured that the end of the semester would mean more time to run and get in good quality workouts.... And it probably would if I hadn't been told that Netflix has the entire series of "How I Met Your Mother."  Typically I am able to pry myself away after 6 episodes, but I really wish I could get my runs in during the early AM.  Oh well... I am trying not to be so rigid, especially in the first month of training. Otherwise, it might be a very long road to Boston.  Running, for me, has almost always been enjoyable.  I say "almost always" because there were certainly some workouts back in college that were not fun.... but I know many people find this notion crazy.  For me, I'm like the little kid that needs to be "run" in order to mellow out.  I sleep better when I run, I think better when I run, and I just feel better when I run.  It is not masochistic for me, but rather, cathartic.  I get that most do not understand this, but that is also why the "crazy running community" is tight-knit.... we have an understanding of the enjoyment that comes with running.

Anyways, enough of that... With the New Year upon us, many of you may be considering adding a new (four-legged) member to the family.  I would encourage you to explore adoption.  We've had a fantastic first year with our handsome little man, and I know that years from now we will rescue again.  With the BTRNC they made sure that Bobby was being placed in a home that was suitable for both him and us.  We appreciated the time and effort that the rescue took with ensuring that him and all of their rescues will end up if what will likely be their 'forever home.'  So there is my little sermon on rescuing... Chloe, as you may know, is our diva dog that I got from a breeder when I was 21.  She is fantastic, very healthy, and I am glad she is mine, but I would rescue if I had been more aware of the option.  And speaking of Chloe, the pic I will attach to this post is her with me after the OBX Marathon in 2010.  We rented a dog- friendly beach house so that we could bring her along to the race.  There was nothing like coming back after the 26.2 miles to an eager Boston terrier (and a hot tub... and a cold beer)!

Happy Holidays!! And Happy New Year!

Gearing Up

Hello Friends!!

Now that my semester is winding down I am taking the opportunity to get various items ready for Boston4Bostons.  I am in the process of figuring out how to link the pledge forn to this blog, so bear with me, and training officially began after Thanksgiving.  I can already tell that one of my barriers to training will be the cold weather, uggh!  I know I cannot complain residing in Georgia and all, but I am very much a fair- weather outdoor exerciser.  I will be keeping you posted on how the training is coming and I will post some of my favorite Boston terriers pics and videos on this blog to remind you how special these dog are.

Thanks for the support everybody! You will be hearing from me soon!

Here We Go!!!

Well Folks, I have officially qualified and been accepted into the 116th Boston Marathon!  I am excited about this opportunity and have decided to make some additional good come out of the experience.  I think most of you who know me also know how much of an animal lover I am.  And in an effort to give back with my talents, I am going to raise money to give back to the rescue that we acquired our dear Bobby from.  While I believe in the importance of all animal rescues, I am choosing the Boston Terrier Rescue of North Carolina to aid in assisting their continued efforts of dog rescue.  The McConnell experience with this rescue was amazing, and we know and understand that the money raised will go to a very worthy cause.

Bobby was adopted in January 2011.  He is an extremely well- adjusted and sweet rescue dog.  I credit a lot of this to his wonderful foster family, who had the heart and generosity to bring Bobby into their lives, and then the capacity to let him go.  It takes a truly special person to be a foster parent.  What we know of Bob's story is that he was left at an animal shelter front door in a crate... his "owner" did not think he was worth the time to walk through the front door and surrender properly.  He did not spend much time at the animal shelter thanks to the rescue efforts of the BTRNC.  And fortunately, besides mange, Bob was a healthy young man with the sweetest spirit and most ornery and adorable personality.  Bob and big sis Chloe now spend each day roasting in the sun or under blankets, chewing (or sucking) on dog toys, wrestling with each other, and trying to find a way to get more treats from Mom and Dad.

Not all Boston terriers in the rescue are so lucky.  Some have severe injuries and chronic illnesses such as heart worms, blindness, orthopedic issues, severe mange, and various cancers.  Some are old and others are young, some have endured abuse and many have experienced neglect.  These dogs have so much to offer their humans and in order for the rescue to be successful they rely on donations, adoption money, and loving foster homes.  By pledging money to this cause, not only are you encouraging me to train my booty off, but more importantly you will be assisting to give these dogs a 2nd chance.

Hence, Boston 4 Bostons is starting with my first day of training on November 14th (Happy Birthday Beck!).  I am asking friends, family, and acquaintances that if they wish to support me and this cause to make a donation based on whether I beat my previous marathon time or not.  Meaning, if I do NOT run faster than 3 hours 33 minutes and 8 seconds, then a one time donation is all that stands.  BUT, if I do beat my qualifying time, then I ask that the pledge be doubled (or tripled if you so desire!)  Regardless, your pledge is going to a very worthy cause.  This is meant to be fun and purposeful at the same time.  And I want to let you know that I truly appreciate your support and generosity.  If you have adopted, or simply understand the joys of having a pet, then you also understand the importance of giving these animals good homes and the health care they need.

Our Bostons have made our days so much brighter and both Mike and I truly believe in this cause.  Thanks again from the whole McConnell crew!

Whit, Mike, Chloe, and Bob
